Barry Michael won the I.B.F. World Super Featherweight title from Lester Ellis at Melbourne Festival Hall on July 12th 1985 over 15 rounds in a gruelling battle. Michael is well remembered for this and other tough bouts including beating Frank Ropis on Ash Wednesday February 16th 1983 at the Melbourne Town Hall. It was over 50° degrees celsius under the ring lights as Michael and Ropis slugged it out in centre ring. In a war that swung one way then the other. Ropis was hurt with a left hook in the 10th and was defenceless as the bell rang. Ropis the Aus. Welterweight Champion answered the bell for the 11th round as his corner immediately threw in the towel to stop the fight.
Another of Michaels most memorable wins was over big punching black American Al “Earthquake” Carter who had a record of 23 wins by KO in 24 fights. Carter came with a reputation of being the most feared lightweight prospect in U.S.A. with 19 straight KO wins. Michael survived the big punches of his dangerous opponent to win a brutal battle over the 10 round distance. This fight was fought at Dallas Brooks Hall on 14th of September 1981. Michael was told in 1987 by David Wolf who was manager of Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, World Lightweight Champ, at the time of this fight that beating Carter cost him a shot at the world title.
